VNbCTx is an M₂X (n = 1) "Group-VB isovalent solid-solution" MXene — V supplies the multivalent redox activity, Nb stabilises the structure and provides the "hydrogen pump"/host function, and the synergy is more direct than in TiNbC.
VNbCTx is obtained by selective etching of the VNbAlC (211) MAX phase. V and Nb both belong to Group VB: identical valence-electron count and closely matching ionic radii allow unlimited mutual solubility in the M layer, so it is a "chemically homogeneous" random solid solution with none of the valence mismatch of TiNbC (where Ti is Group IVB).
