Surface Modification Methods for Silicon Dioxide Powder

Introduction:

Silicon dioxide powder is widely used in various industrial fields due to its unique properties. However, as a powder, it suffers from drawbacks such as low reactivity, poor dispersion, and low surface energy. Surface modification is a way to improve the properties of silicon dioxide powder and enhance its performance in various applications. In this article, we will discuss a surface modification method for silicon dioxide powder using a silane coupling agent and its effect on the properties of silicon dioxide powder.


Method:

To modify the surface of silicon dioxide powder, 5g of silicon micro-powder was placed in a beaker and mixed with a mixed solution of deionized water and ethanol at a volume ratio of 1:9. The pH value of the solution was adjusted to around 4 using ice acetic acid. The mixture was then ultrasonically dispersed for 15 minutes. After that, different mass fractions of silane coupling agent KH-550 were added using a micropipette, and the mixture was ultrasonically treated for another 5 minutes. The modified reaction was carried out using a constant temperature magnetic stirrer at 100℃ for 120 minutes. The modified silicon micro-powder was then filtered and dried to obtain surface-modified silicon micro-powder.


Results:

The modified silicon micro-powder was characterized by particle size, surface morphology, oil absorption value, activation index, and infrared spectroscopy. The activation index and oil absorption value of the modified silicon micro-powder were 82.4% and 0.264ml/g, respectively, which are significantly higher than the values for the unmodified powder. In the infrared spectrum, a new absorption peak appeared, indicating that the coupling agent had chemically bonded to the surface of the silicon micro-powder. Thus, the surface modification effectively enhances the reactivity and dispersion of silicon dioxide powder.
